And now we are at war: " World War-C. "
HR's role as a strategic organizational partner
has been realized and validated since early
2020. COVID forced this situation upon HR
professionals, and by all accounts they rose to
the occasion. COVID presented many new
challenges for HR professionals on top of their
preexisting responsibilities.
HR teams responded to the remote working
demands, technological responses to the work
itself, heightened safety concerns, dynamic
policy changes (science- or regulatory-driven),
and constantly changing directives. They met
the challenges while focusing on the patient
care mission of the organization. HR had to at
times assume unpopular positions, rendering
difficult decisions while delivering services and
contributions to the management and success
of the organization. Layoffs, furloughs, personal
and family pressures, isolation, scarcity of critical
resources, mental health issues, cybersecurity
threats, and multiple governmental laws and
regulations all were managed in no small part
in many organizations by HR professionals.
HR, as that strategic business partner, requires
roles, challenges, and opportunities - including
trust, the new workplace currency in WW
" C " . HR now requires specific competencies
to optimize the opportunity for victory in this
war, including:
Strategic thinking
Business / operational acumen
HR program implementation
HR policy development
Technology capabilities
Credibility, leadership, and consultation
Cultural awareness
Elements critical for empowering HR to be
that strategic business partner include:
Culture - Be seen living the mission and
shaping values
Communication - Recognize the power of
transparent interaction with everyone - and
embrace it. Also, live sincerely and create trust.
Connectivity - Use remote working,
ZOOM, and related technology to create
accountability, which will translate to exceptional
performance.
Collaboration - Embrace it as the key to
unleashing your organization's strategic advantage.
Encourage team effort, innovate, and find
ways to help stakeholders.
Confidence - Anticipate that COVID will
test your mettle, and your organization's too.
Only by achieving goals and the success that
follows will you realize your strengths. Your
reward is confidence and the continuation of
the virtuous cycle.
