improved access to data enables health systems
to monitor processes on an ongoing basis and
remain vigilant to community need.
" Historically, the health care systems have been
able to convene around identified needs and
align efforts to address those needs, " Batchelor
wrote in an email. " WellSpan acknowledges the
need for all health care systems to take action on
the identified needs in Lancaster County and
embraces the opportunity to work collaboratively
toward shared goals. "
While the CHNA currently in progress will
not be available until summer 2022, Batchelor
shared that its core themes include the social
determinants of health, access to care, health
equity, behavioral health and lifelong wellness,
and COVID-19 impact and recovery.
" Those themes represent imperative community
health issues to address, " Batchelor wrote.
WellSpan has a long history of community
involvement and partners closely with
Lancaster-based organization to address identified
community health issues. Its 2019 Community
Health Improvement Plan outlined its response
to that need, which included implementing
social determinant of health screenings internally,
transforming its Community Partnership Grant
program to align with the findings of the CHNA,
and expanding its housing and food insecurity
efforts regionally.
Also, in response to community health needs
WellSpan offers health education programs
and initiatives focusing on lifestyle behaviors
and prevention, and screens hospital patients
for food insecurity, providing shelf-stable meals
and referrals to community-based services upon
discharge for those in need. In partnership with
the Northern Lancaster Hub, the health system
implemented the " Talk Tank, " a means of
remotely and securely connecting individuals to
mental health services, and supports the Ephrata
Garden, which has donated more than 1,000
pounds of produce to the food pantry at Ephrata
Area Social Services.
WellSpan serves as a collaborative partner
to the Northern Lancaster Hub and has been
busy during the pandemic assisting with food,
housing, and utility assistance, providing information
regarding available resources, and offering
assurance and medical advice.
Batchelor shared that WellSpan has been
conducting CHNAs for 25 years, using them
to directs its actions and community response.
Because of increased availability of data, he said
the health system is actively transitioning its
needs assessment program to include ongoing
monitoring processes. That, he explained, will
enable WellSpan to always be current regarding
trends, any sort of crisis, and ongoing need,
enabling the health system to respond quickly
and effectively to the communities it serves.
