President's Message
W
hy does it feel like the movie Groundhog Day? We were eagerly looking
forward to a return to some sort of normal this fall. We had anticipated a
lively discussion at our Lancaster City & County Medical Society Annual
Dinner meeting with speakers pro and con for a Lancaster Public Health
Department. More importantly, we were looking forward to some fellowship with our colleagues.
After cancelling last year's Holiday Social, we are saddened to announce the postponement of
that event this year, too. We do not anticipate that the pandemic will subside enough to make
a large indoor gathering in the next few months wise. As physicians we must lead by example;
we do not want to hold a super spreader event. However, we also do not want to go another
year without connecting as an organization in a way more personal than Zoom.
We are hoping to host a gathering for our members in the spring in place of our usual early
December event. Fortunately, the scholarship program has gone forward, and we had numerous
qualified candidates. The top contenders were selected with difficulty, and we hope to see many
of them join our ranks in the coming years. We encourage donations to that program even if
we don't get to laud them until the spring. Representatives from Lancaster are also participating
virtually in the PAMED House of Delegates Meeting this fall to make our concerns known.
How did we end up in this position again when we have measures to mitigate and prevent
infection? Masks and vaccines, while not 100 percent, have overwhelming evidence to support
their use. I am incredibly proud of and thankful for the Lancaster physicians and other health
professionals that spoke out publicly, including at school board meetings, for the benefit of
their communities. They have often faced abusive opposition from the uneducated. The
majority of our board members and I stand behind you, in agreement with the American
Academy of Pediatrics, the CDC, and Lancaster General Health. Support educated medicine
and responsible choices, even if does not make you popular. These are not " opinions, " they
are facts. Support science.
