Managing the Risk of Cardiac Disease

can be modified. They include tobacco abuse, obesity, high blood
pressure, high cholesterol, diabetes, and alcohol abuse. Over the age
of forty, men should seek routine health care to screen for and treat
diabetes, high blood pressure, and high cholesterol. Otherwise, these
risks may go unnoticed and untreated. Ignoring these diseases can
have major consequences, such as heart attack and stroke.
Weight reduction is an important component in maintaining
health. Being overweight increases the risk of heart disease, stroke,
and diabetes. To maintain a healthy weight, good nutrition and
exercise are key factors. Men should become aware of a healthy
calorie limit, and limit their intake of high-fat foods, such as fried
foods, red meat, baked goods, and dairy products (like whole milk,
cream and ice cream). Generally speaking, a 2,000-calorie diet is the
recommendation for the average male, but specific guidelines vary
for everyone based on individual needs. Your doctor can suggest a
nutrition plan or may refer you to a nutritionist for expert recommendations regarding your diet and weight management.

Smoking is a major risk factor that can be controlled. Smoking
markedly increases the risks of heart attack and stroke. Quitting
smoking is not easy for many, but you do not have to do it alone.
There are several ways your doctor can help you quit if you are
interested. Eliminating this one habit has major benefits, so make
sure to discuss this at your next physical.

High blood pressure can be diagnosed by your health care professional. There are many factors that contribute to high blood pressure
including age, weight, and family history, as well as dietary sodium
intake. High blood pressure typically has no symptoms, unless it is
severely uncontrolled. This is why it is often referred to as the silent
killer. The condition is easily treated, and its reduction has been
proven to reduce the risk of complications like heart disease and stroke.

Where Experience
Meets Excellence

High cholesterol, like high blood pressure, has no symptoms,
increases risk, and is treatable. Diabetes is associated with major
risk but does have symptoms when significant elevations of blood
sugar occur. However, it too can be without symptoms during the
early stages of the disease.
Men have other screening needs not discussed here. They include
screening for prostate cancer, colon cancer, and lung and skin cancer.
Men have a significantly higher risk of accidental death and suicide
compared to women. However, it is heart disease that claims so
many lives that could likely be saved. Early detection, intervention,
treatment, and lifestyle modification can have significant impact on
the prognosis for patients with heart disease.
If you are an adult male (or if you're married or otherwise related
to one), please consider the importance of health screenings for men.
A simple annual physical will detect the early signs of cardiac disease,
identify its major risk factors, and reduce the risk of dying from it.
Do yourself and your family a favor, schedule an appointment with
your primary care provider.

LANCASTER

After decades of caring
for others, Dr. Wert
suddenly found himself
on the receiving end of
treatment. Stage four
cancer had robbed his
body of the strength
he needed to continue
helping impoverished
countries receive proper
medical care. Lancaster
Cancer Center gave Dr.
Wert his life back so he
could return to helping
those in need.
