SPRING 2018

A

rea behavioral health care providers generally
agree that the demand for mental health services exceeds available care-and that more
resources are needed in order to serve complex
and widespread behavioral health disorders.
They also agree, however, that there is positive change
underway, and that as recognition of the need for services
increases, additional resources may be put into making care
more readily available for those in need.
Lancaster Physician asked representatives of UPMC
Pinnacle, WellSpan Health/WellSpan Philhaven, Penn
Medicine Lancaster General Health, and Penn State Health
to share their perspectives on the state of behavioral health
care in Lancaster County and to offer a glimpse of what
they believe that care may look like in the future.
Philip D. Hess, Vice President, WellSpan Health, and
President, WellSpan Philhaven; Erika F. H. Saunders, M.D.,
Chair, Department of Psychiatry, Penn State Milton Hershey Medical Center; Jayne Van Bramer, CEO, Lancaster
Behavioral Health Hospital (a joint venture between Penn
Medicine Lancaster General Health and Universal Health
Services); and Anthony Marucco, LCSW, a psychiatric
clinical social worker for UPMC Pinnacle, participated.

WHY THE SHORTAGE OF SERVICES?
When asked about the shortage of mental health care
that occurs nationwide, all agreed that several factors
contribute, including a shortage of psychiatrists, pressure
from insurance companies, confusion among patients
about how to access and use services that are in place, and
an ever-growing number of Americans living with mental
health challenges.
According to Van Bramer, more than one in five adults in
the United States experience some type of behavioral health
disorder in a given year, and, in Lancaster County, more
than 30,000 adults have been diagnosed with a behavioral
health condition.

Unfortunately, she added, of the nearly 60 million Americans living with mental health challenges, about 60 percent
received no treatment in the past year, despite the fact that
we know serious mental illness results in negative consequences for patients and their families. Those consequences
can include significantly reduced life span, increased chance
of incarceration, and lower quality of living.
