APPLICATIONS SOUGHT FOR
MEDICAL SCHOOL SCHOLARSHIPS
Medical Society Foundation Awarding Funds for 2018-2019 Academic Year

pplications are now being accepted for the
annual scholarship program of The Lancaster Medical Society Foundation. Open
to Lancaster County residents, accepted or
continuing a medical degree at an accredited medical
school, applicants must demonstrate academic achievement, exhibit good character and motivation, and show
financial need. Funding for the 2018-2019 academic
year will be announced in September.

"We want students to be able to pursue their passion for medicine, without the constant worry about
how they will make ends meet following graduation,"
continued Gerber. "These awards, in part, will allow
Lancaster County residents to focus on finding success
in this profession, ultimately, hopefully filling our
community's future health care workforce needs."
Generously supported by the Lancaster County
medical community, including local hospitals,
group practices, individual Medical Society members, and various businesses, The Foundation has
awarded over $224,000 in funds since its establishment in 1991. For more information, or to obtain

June 30, 2018 for consideration.

"We know the cost of medical school is a burden
for most students," said Beth E. Gerber, Executive
Director of the Lancaster City & County Medical
Society. "The majority of medical school graduates
leave school with hundreds of thousands in student
loan debt. Thanks to the support of area physicians,
health systems, businesses and other generous individuals, we are able to help ease that load."
Last year, according to a recent report from the
Association of American Medical Colleges, the average
debt burden of U.S. medical students that borrowed
was $191,000. The AAMC report found that the
average debt load is even higher for 2017 graduates
who attended a private med school: around $206,000.
