The new hospital also delivers on a commitment Penn State Health made in 2017 when
it partnered with Highmark Health to build a
broader community network.
DESIGNED WITH PHYSICIANS IN MIND
"Lancaster Medical Center will bring the best
of Penn State Health into a community hospital
setting, backed by the nationally recognized
capabilities of Penn State Health Milton S.
Hershey Medical Center less than 30 minutes
away," said Joe Frank, senior vice president of
community network development for Penn
State Health.
The new hospital will feature an open medical
staff. "While some of our physicians, particularly
hospitalists, will be employed by Penn State
Health, many community and independent
physicians will have staff privileges, too," Lord
said. "Any physician can apply."
In addition, the new facility will offer OR
capacity and design to help achieve operational
efficiencies, improve patient flow, and enhance
care quality. "The operating suites will offer
the latest surgical navigation systems to assist
physicians in preparing for and performing
minimally invasive and computer-assisted
surgical procedures," Frank said.

The OR design will help create smooth transitions from pre-admission and pre-op testing
through the day of surgery and discharge. The
ORs also will have the flexibility to scale for
complex cases regardless of whether cases are
electives, urgent, or emergent.
EXPANDING CARE OPTIONS REGIONWIDE
The new hospital is the latest in a series of
Penn State Health investments designed to
increase access to care for people in central
Pennsylvania. In 2017, Penn State Health
welcomed more than 100 providers from
Physicians' Alliance LTD (PAL) and its 12
practices across Dauphin, Lancaster, and York
counties. This allowed PAL providers to expand
patient care services locally while also providing
their patients with direct access to Penn State
Health resources.
Early in 2019, Penn State Health opened
the 76,000-square-foot Lime Spring Outpatient Center in East Hempfield Township.
That facility brings internal medicine, family
medicine, pediatrics, and numerous specialty
health services together under one roof. Lancaster Medical Center will be located within a
10-minute drive of Lime Spring.

the 1800s," Warren said. "While it was nostalgic
and comfortable, it couldn't be configured to
provide the modern team-based care, ancillary
services, or parking that today's patients need."
In March 2019, the health system broke
ground on its third adult acute care hospital,
Penn State Health Hampden Medical Center
in Mechanicsburg. The $200 million, 108-bed
facility is on target to open in summer 2021.
All these investments will help meet the
health care needs of a growing population.
"Lancaster Medical Center will offer people
increased health care services and choice, and
that's a good thing," Warren said.
