SPRING 2020

embrace the elements. We often spend a significant amount of time
as employees and physicians caring for our patients, but we neglect to
nurture our team. We need to spend more time empathizing, listening,
and coaching to spark the best attributes of each team member. You may
have never considered the front desk person might have a fantastic idea
about how to position the diagnostic equipment in the exam room or
recognized that the medical assistant identified a challenge with how
patients receive their eye glass prescriptions in the office. The most creative ideas can and will come from members of the team who indirectly
touch the treatment process.

Taking the time to learn from one another and making the most of
learning about the individuals who make up your team just may be the
most valuable time you spend. A team that has the platform to engage in
a supportive environment has been proven to be more productive and
creative (Premuzic, T., Garrad, L. & Elzinga, D., 2018). These attributes
are what we want to share with our patients. Design thinking is an avenue that intertwines the core operational elements into private practice.

The design thinking process offers a new beginning and a fresh perspective on the scientifically proven and the non-traditional blend of
organizational thinking models. The leadership team must embrace the
concept and engage the team. They need to get more personal and make
connections. When the team begins to hit its stride, the leadership team
should take a back seat and maintain a watchful eye (Bason, C. & Austin,
R. 2019). They need to identify when the team needs encouragement
and stimulate creativity.

Care Beyond Treatment

The elements in the design thinking process do not need to be sequential
in nature. If a return to a different phase of the process is warranted, then
iterate as necessary. No two problem statements are alike. Each new idea
is best when vetted through viable alternatives. The human-centered
focus is at the heart of producing the best solution. If you find you are
moving away from the human-centered elements, pause and reflect on
what was identified as a challenge for the individual or team.

The future of health care within the private practice setting involves doing
more with less. The design thinking model may be another component
toward successful employee engagement. It has been proven that engaged
employees are more positive and productive individuals. These attributes
translate into a more positive patient experience. The design thinking
model is flexible and can be adapted to your specific area of practice.
