for Medical School Students
pplications are now being accepted by the Lancaster
Medical Society Foundation for 2020-2021 academic
year scholarship dollars. Eligible applicants must be a
Lancaster County resident, accepted or continuing a
medical degree at an accredited medical school, and must demonstrate academic achievement, exhibit good character and motivation,
and show financial need.
"Debt is a significant factor in selecting a school and a career path
for most medical school students," said Beth E. Gerber, executive
director of Lancaster City & County Medical Society and the Lancaster Medical Society Foundation. "We want to help alleviate that
financial burden, allowing students to focus instead on becoming
talented and compassionate physicians and future medical leaders
in our community."
LANCASTER
According to the National Center for Education Statistics, the total
student loan debt taken on by doctors to graduate from medical
school has nearly doubled since 1999-2000. The latest statistics
show that eight out of 10 medical school graduates borrow to earn
their degree-and most take on six-figure debt with 18 percent
borrowing $300,000 or more.
Generously supported by the Lancaster County medical community, including local health systems, group practices, individual
Medical Society members, and various businesses, the Foundation
has awarded over $44,000 in funds since its establishment in 1991.
