human body), clinicians can get hands-on
training in providing care to patients who
are in cardiac arrest, giving birth, having
an asthma attack, suffering a diabetic emergency, and experiencing a wide variety of
other health care issues.

Staff can administer
simulated medications
to the manikin, which
will react in real time.

Ephrata Community Hospital, after attending a "get acquainted session orientation"
with Manny and watching his heart react to
a cardiac defibrillation. "It can do all kinds
of things and helps you apply your skills."
The lab, which is on the second floor of
the hospital, is expected to provide annual
training to about 600 staff members, including nurses, physicians, nurse practitioners,
paramedics, and other clinicians.

They can give the manikin an electrocardiogram and watch its heart rhythm on
a monitor. They can shine a light into its
eyes and see its pupils react.

Educators also can take the manikins
onto nursing units, setting them up in a
patient room and simulating emergencies
such as a cardiac or respiratory arrest, so
staff can practice their skills in an everyday
patient-care setting.

"It's really good," said Sandy Shultz, a
nurse in the intensive care unit at WellSpan

"With this new simulation lab, our
clinical staff can learn by doing, in a safe

environment," said Tina Citro, vice president of patient care services and chief
nursing officer at WellSpan Ephrata Community Hospital. "They can work together
as a team and get immediate feedback on
what they did."
The lab has videotape equipment that
can capture training as it occurs in the lab.
The lab includes a room with video monitors and a space for staff to gather, watch
their training sessions, and be debriefed
by instructors.
Supported by the Ephrata Community
Health Foundation, the $300,000 classroom was funded by donations and grants,
including a $50,000 grant from the Dart
Foundation as well as gifts from community
donors and WellSpan Ephrata Community
Hospital physicians and staff.
