Lancaster Physician Summer 2019 - 45
SUMMER 2019
The Edward Hand Award, established in 1994,
is presented to a physician or layperson for his/
her outstanding work in the healthcare field. The
2019 honoree was Dr. Nikitas Zervanos, MD.
Director Emeritus, Department of Family
and Community Medicine, Lancaster General
Health, Dr. Zervanos developed the Family
Medicine Residency Program at Lancaster
General Hospital when there were just a few
residency programs in place across the country.
He began by converting Lancaster General
Hospital's outpatient department, a collection
of clinics that provided services on a voluntary
basis to indigent patients, into a family practice
office. The residency recruited and brought in
its first three residents in July of 1970.
Dr. Zervanos was also the driving force behind
the Edward Hand Medical Heritage Foundation and Museum, serving as its president for
many years. He spearheaded the longest existing
family medicine review course through Temple
University and is the author of several historical
accounts of the history of medicine.
LCCMS members Justin L. Cappiello, MD,
FACS, and Brian P. Condron, MD, were
acknowledged for their service in the practice
of medicine for 50 years, marked by their
graduation from medical school.
The evening also included a keynote panel
discussion, featuring Jan Loeffler Bergen, President & Chief Executive Officer, Penn Medicine
Lancaster General Health; Jeanette A. Gibbs,
Senior Vice President, Penn State Health Medical Group; M. Brooks Turkel, FACHE, Senior
Vice President & President, UPMC Pinnacle
Lancaster Region; and Carrie Willets, Senior
Vice President, WellSpan Health & President,
WellSpan Ephrata Community Hospital.
The panelists answered questions about the
future of health care in Lancaster County,
providing their views on topics such as sharing
data and staying interconnected across health
systems; the disruption caused by changing
medications during hospital stays; ensuring continued patient care choices of both
employed and independent physicians; plans
for reducing physician burnout, and what
visioning scenarios they use when positioning
their systems for the future. Questions were
also taken from the audience.
In addition to celebrating the health of Lancaster County, the evening also served as the
175th anniversary of Lancaster City & County
Medical Society. As documented in the October
1976 edition of Lancaster Medicine, the history
of this society is "the record of a struggle, the
rehearsal of a comparatively few members of
the profession to elevate its standard, advance
medical science, and promote good fellowship."
It is recorded that Dr. Eli Parry sent an invitation to the physicians of the city, asking them
to meet at his house on January 14, 1844,
for the purpose of taking into consideration
the formation of a society. As result of that
meeting, the following call appeared in the
public prints . . .
The medical gentlemen are respectfully invited
to meet the physicians of the city in the room
of the city Lyceum, at 11 o'clock a.m., on
Wednesday, the 14th of February 1844, for
the purpose of organizing a city and county
medical society. A general attendance is desired,
and those who cannot attend are requested to
return an answer to this invitation to either
of the subscribers. Signed Samuel Humes,
Chairman & Washington L. Atlee, Secretary.

At the meeting, a constitution was reported and with some slight amendments, adopted,
and the following were elected as the first
officers of the newly formed society: President, Samuel Humes, MD; Vice Presidents,
F.A. Muhlenberg, MD, and Samuel Duffield,
MD; Recording Secretary, Henry Carpenter,
MD; Corresponding Secretary, Washington
L. Atlee, MD; and Treasurer and Librarian,
Eli Parry, MD.
The rest, as they say, is history. From those
initial 43 charter members, to the nearly 650
who have made a membership investment
this year, LCCMS continues to serve the
physicians of Lancaster County each and every
day-elevating the standard of the profession,
advancing medical science and promoting
good fellowship.
