unease that is experienced by so many women in medicine.
The importance of stressing fairness in the workplace cannot
be understated.
More studies are exposing unfair behavior to women physicians in training and in practice. At the 2019 ASCO meeting,
two abstracts and one poster were presented that highlighted
gender disparity. One involved sexual harassment and gender
disparity among gynecologic oncologists. Many times, few
women report the occurrences because of fear of reprisal or
that nothing will change as a result of the reporting. Female
gynecologic physicians feel gender influences salaries and
career advancement and, as that is more acknowledged, change
will occur. Another abstract evaluated gender bias in speaker
introductions at an international oncology meeting. When
introduced by men, female speakers were more likely to be
introduced by their first name only compared to male speakers, thereby diluting their credibility. In a poster presentation,
gender disparities were cited in oncology research involving
the identification of authors of scientific publications, grant
applications, and peer review. Female surgical residents note
differences in the way they are treated in the operating room
by attendings and scrub techs. Male residents can demand
surgical instruments, but if a female asks for something
authoritatively, she is considered bossy or rude. Being labeled
as too outspoken seems to come easier to females than males.
Women can lose credibility much easier than men. As these
disparities are exposed and talked about more, change in
behavior will be inevitable.
