President's Message
t is nice to see the forward progress we have made in the fight against COVID-19. I am
just a little bit competitive and love seeing our vaccination rate compared to surrounding
counties. However, we can and should do a lot better. Keep plugging along, one patient
at a time. As trusted healthcare team leaders, your recommendations are valued by people
in the community. Let's make Lancaster County Number 1 in the state!
As mask mandates lift and society opens up, I ask you to rely on common sense. As
physicians, we are used to evidence-based medicine for evaluating problems and making
decisions. Unfortunately, in emergent and emerging situations we may not have all the answers
from placebo-controlled trials. However, we know our patients, and all of us have at least a
rudimentary knowledge of infectious disease. Risk stratification might guide us as we help
patients navigate situations, e.g., indoors vs. out, mask vs. no mask, and so on. Some people
and some situations will likely call for us to keep wearing our masks, in other circumstances,
it might be unnecessary or even silly. Common sense.
As we move forward as a county, state and country, we look forward to next steps, improving
future responses. Debate has waged pros and cons regarding a local health department for
Lancaster. We look forward to respectfully hosting speakers, representing both sides of the
issue, at our IN-PERSON (fingers crossed), Annual Dinner in the fall. We also have several
other upcoming events, including our Lancaster County Women in Medicine initiative and
the annual Holiday Social & Foundation Benefit. Please remember that your donations to the
scholarship fund would be welcome. Some of our best Lancaster physicians benefited from it
already and came home to practice after their training. Also, I would like to express a special
thank you to Dr Scheid for his recent presentation at our Early Career Physicians event, Candid
Conversations: Finance.
