ADVERTORIAL

MRI Group Adds 3T Advanced Imaging Technology
The MRI Group now offers 3.0 Tesla (3T) imaging capabilities.
The 3T machine uses an advanced Magnetic Resonance
Imaging (MRI) scanner to create higher resolution images.
The 3T MRI, which came on-line this past November, is
located at the MRI Group's 2104 Harrisburg Pike office.
" By improving magnetic strength, we can improve the
imaging resolution and decrease the scan time for select
scan types, " explains Dr. Dhiren Patel, MRI Group radiologist,
who is President of Lancaster Radiology Associates (LRA)
and Section Chief of Neuroradiology for Penn Medicine
Lancaster General Health. " That's advantageous for many
reasons, from diagnosis to patient satisfaction. "
The 3T scanner features a wide-bore opening for patient
comfort and is twice the strength of the more standard 1.5
Tesla (1.5T) scanner.
" We are an affordable MRI provider already offering a wide
array of subspecialized imaging, " Patel states. " The addition
of this piece of equipment just increases the cutting-edge
imaging we are able to do. "
According to Patel, the 3T scanner features a greater signalto-noise ratio (SNR), which is the ratio between the strength
of the signal and the level of background noise. Better SNR
enables higher spatial resolution, which improves imaging of
small anatomical structures and pathology.
Patel says he expects the 3T scanner to be particularly
advantageous for brain, prostate, nerve roots in the spine,
small bone structures, and perfusion imaging (how blood
passes through tissue). " 3T is ideal for small, detailed
structures and deep areas within the body, " he states.
The scanner will enable the MRI Group to offer high-quality,
advanced neuro imaging including spectroscopy (a study
that evaluates the amount of certain chemicals present in
tissues and biochemical changes in the brain). It will also
allow for functional MRIs, which measure small changes in
blood flow that occur with brain activity.
Patients undergoing prostate MRIs will benefit from the
3T scanner because it allows for the scan to be performed
without the use of an endorectal coil, which many patients
find uncomfortable. The small size of the prostate gland and
its deep location within the pelvis often requires use of the
endorectal coil when imaging the prostate with a 1.5T scanner.
The increased signal of the 3T, however, makes it possible to
image the prostate using an external surface coil instead.

While the 3T scanner is invaluable in certain situations,
it will not replace the 1.5 machine, which remains the
standard and is the most used MRI equipment.
" The 1.5 is the workhorse and it produces excellent images, " Patel
says. " It actually is better for some scans, such as breast and
cardiac imaging. While the 3T will keep us at the forefront and
let us provide more advanced and detailed imaging work, the 1.5
provides most of the answers we need at a favorable cost. "
Subspecialized physicians within the MRI Group will work
with referring clinicians to determine which type of imaging
is most appropriate for patients. MRI Group physicians are
constantly evaluating new techniques and study types to
remain at the top of their respective fields and they work
closely with providers in a synergistic relationship.
" We've had a longstanding collaboration with health-care
providers in this area, " Patel says. " We've built a lot of trust
with our referring physicians. "
Cooperation between clinicians and MRI Group physicians
enables patients to receive the most appropriate testing
and for MRI Group staff to employ a smooth and efficient
scheduling process.
" We are here, 24-7, 365 days a year, " Patel says. " My father was
a physician and he always said, 'you have to be available.' We
have sites that do testing at 10 o'clock at night and radiologists
who can respond quickly to emergent studies and produce
timely reports. We cherish being part of the multi-disciplinary
team that cares for patients within our community. "
The MRI Group has seven locations in Lancaster County and
one in Chester County. Learn more at MRIGroup.com.
