AREA STUDENTS AWARDED MEDICAL SCHOOL SCHOLARSHIPS
Lancaster Medical Society Foundation Presents $12,000 to Lancaster Residents

T

he Lancaster Medical Society Foundation,
a Foundation of the Lancaster City &
County Medical Society, recently awarded its 2020 scholarships to Sheldon K.
Amoo-Mitchual of Mount Joy and Joshua D.
Pezzulo, Heather A. Brubaker, and Darren J.
Mast, all of Lancaster.

Pezzulo graduated from Penn State University
and is currently in his first year at the Sidney
Kimmel Medical College at Thomas Jefferson
University. He explains that his interest in medicine began to take shape during the summer
between high school and college when he endured
the deaths of two of his grandparents.

Amoo-Mitchual received a $4,500 scholarship,
Pezzulo received $3,500, and Brubaker and Mast
both received $2,000. They were selected through
a competitive review process with submissions
from applicants throughout Lancaster County.

" The stark difference between how my grandparents spent their last days ultimately ended
up inspiring me early in college. It solidified
the foundation for the formation of a club that
works with a population of older adults who are
terminally ill or in chronic pain, with a goal of
improving their quality of life. Club members
meet with residents of local nursing homes to learn
about their lifestyles, unique cultures, religious
backgrounds and discern what is most valuable
to them. The information from our conversations
helps shape activities at the facility. I want to
understand a person's background and use that
knowledge to better their life. As a physician that
is an honor I would have every day. "

Amoo-Mitchaul is a graduate of the University
of Pennsylvania and a first-year medical student at
the Perelman School of Medicine at the University
of Pennsylvania in Philadelphia.
Sheldon's desire to enter the medical field
was ignited through volunteer experiences and
witnessing first-hand his grandmother's debilitating condition.
" My grandmother suffered from a pain that
was inherently hard to control, yet through the
diligence and collaboration of physicians and
specialists, she has improved immensely, and they
have helped her manage her chronic condition.
That ordeal cemented my desire to enter the medical field and I have sought out opportunities over
the last few years that I believe will help me grow
to eventually become a compassionate provider. "

Brubaker, a graduate of Ursinus, is a student at
Edward Via College of Osteopathic Medicine in
Virginia. She discovered her passion for medicine
during a challenging time in her life.
" I was at the highest level of Junior Olympic
gymnastics and was extremely excited for the
upcoming season. As I landed one of my passes
during practice, excruciating pain radiated from
my knee. An MRI would later reveal a torn ACL,
a devastating injury for a young gymnast. While
that one wrong landing took away my gymnastics

season, the inquiry changed the direction of my
life. At the time I had no set career path but interacting with my surgeon made it clear. I wanted
to help others like he helped me. "
Mast is a graduate of Mount Saint Mary's
University and is a student at the Philadelphia
College of Osteopathic Medicine. His interest in
career in health care began with a teenage injury,
drawing him to a path towards physical therapy,
but his passion for learning more about medicine
increased while in college.
" While shadowing and working in many different medical fields, I witnessed the sacrifices and
commitment to the patient's overall health that
it takes to be a prominent physician. However, I
found that the pride and priority that physicians
take in their interactions with the patients to be the
most significant. An emphasis on commitment
and sacrifices challenged me to think deeply
about my love for the medical field, ultimately
strengthening my desire to become a physician. "
Founded in 1991, the Lancaster Medical
Society Foundation is a 501(c)3 nonprofit organization that was formed to grant scholarships to
students from Lancaster County who are accepted
at or continuing a medical degree at an accredited
allopathic or osteopathic medical school.
Scholarship recipients exemplify good character, motivation, academic achievement, and
financial need. Since its inception, more than
$246,000 in scholarships has been given to
deserving local students.
