WINTER 2021

President's Message

he start of 2021 still leaves us in unprecedented times. Physicians across the
United States and in Pennsylvania may suffer job uncertainty, financial setbacks, delayed or accelerated retirement, and an incredible increase in stress
and workload in an already demanding profession. However, as with all New
Years, it also gives us hope for the future.
With vaccine approval and rollout, while with their own challenges, we have a path
forward. We have again an opportunity and a responsibility to institute change for the
benefit of our patients and for our community here in Lancaster.
We should be wearing our masks unquestionably-yes, over our noses!-and not just
in places like our offices but also around family and friends and when out in public. Limit
family gatherings and set an example for others. Get vaccinated. Protect the health of
your families, patients, and yourselves. Encourage your patients and support staff to get
vaccinated. Discussions and education about vaccination are one of the important health
tools we have available. Benefits well outweigh risks, especially comparing deaths from
vaccine to deaths from COVID-19, as well as morbidity, missed workdays, and dollars
spent and lost.

I would like to remind everyone that as practicing physicians in Lancaster County,
Lancaster City & County Medical Society is a resource and an aide for all of us. We are
working to get vaccines to independent practitioners and their staffs, groups often overlooked by the hospital systems. While we are all a little Zoomed out, we have had virtual
programming and links to valuable topics ranging from our Women in Medicine initiative
to new coding guidelines. Our legislative event for members was an informative virtual
meeting, featuring a Q&A with PA House Speaker Brian Cutler.
In the coming spring and summer, we hope to include some social meetups in appropriate
formats. I missed everyone at the annual Holiday Social this year and encourage everyone
to still support our Foundation scholarship program that has helped local physicians afford
their medical education.
While it will feel strange, and I may never shake hands again, I cannot wait to get out
with people later in 2021-a better year is ahead!
