FROM THE PRESIDENT

hello.
Hello, and welcome to our second issue of the Lehigh County
Medical Society magazine, Lehigh County Health & Medicine. We
continue to bring you articles on health, wellness and medicine
for Lehigh County, and we look forward to your responses, ideas,
and contributions.
In this issue, our topics cover a range of health issues. You'll read
about Spontaneous Coronary Artery Dissection (SCAD), diabetic
foot care, Aphasia and Scleroderma. We include an article about
National Safety month; a piece on fitness; and a couple of articles
from the Allentown Health Bureau, including one on the Million
Clicks walking program, and another on blood lead levels in the
Lehigh Valley.

We have a commentary on the opioid epidemic and the use of
medical marijuana. Inside this issue, you will find a piece from a
retired physician, along with an article on how physicians can think
about preparing for retirement. It also includes a piece from the AMA
on physician burnout, and the Lehigh County Medical Society's
Humaneness in Medicine award winner for 2017.
We hope you find these articles on health insightful, and that
they provide you with useful background information, as well as
tips and tools to consider using. The article on diabetic foot care
speaks to the importance of educating and training on proper
foot care, while the article on National Safety Month educates on
techniques to reduce injuries. The articles about SCAD, Aphasia,
and Scleroderma aim to provide insights on how these conditions
affect the lives of those who suffer from them.
Additionally, you will find some personal reflections in this
issue, including a look at a father and son team who work together,
performing surgery in a Third World country. Another piece covers
contrasting opinions regarding drug pricing from two medical
students.
We're enthusiastic about this issue of Lehigh County Health and
Medicine, and eager to contribute to the conversation about how
medicine and wellness can help us form strong communities in
Lehigh County.
