patients on the dangers of Lyme, but stress the importance of
funding vital research. While antibiotics can cure early Lyme,
once the disease enters its chronic stage it is much harder
to control. Sufferers are often left with neurological deficits,
cardiac problems, and debilitating fatigue. Given that the
emergence of insect-borne and tropical diseases will only
worsen as the planet warms, avoiding these infections takes
on a more urgent tone - especially for young kids.
I saw my friend the other day. She's back at work, and
ready to return to the gym. Now off meds, her experience
with Lyme is in the rear-view mirror. Gone, but not
forgotten.
She's one of the lucky ones. And unless we tackle this
looming public-health crisis, others won't be.

"I had a feeling what it might be, but it was still a shock
when the cultures came back," says Leeann Parton of West
Chester, PA. "The pain got really bad, really fast." The
29-year-old physician assistant immediately knew something
was amiss, and quickly sought medical attention. "I called
a doctor friend, and as soon as he heard my symptoms, he
told me to get it looked at." Thankfully, what could've been
a serious case of Lyme arthritis was caught early, and she
was started on oral treatment. "I can walk again," she says.
"Hopefully, I'll be back in the gym soon." How was she
exposed? Her outdoor cat, on whom she often finds ticks.
"I'm always careful," she says, "but it wasn't enough." The
plan going forward? "I'll be keeping a closer eye on him," she
tells me. "No more unplanned trips to the woods."
