SIDEBAR Fall 2019 - 21

The Montgomery County Justice Center will have two
entrances: one from Main Street and one from Swede Street at
the intersection with Penn Street. Both entrances will equally
demonstrate the importance of the work done in a courthouse,
while providing intuitive wayfinding for all those who enter
the Montgomery County Justice Center: whether it is to
make a child support payment, to commence litigation on a
multimillion dollar medical malpractice case, or to simply apply
for a passport.
The space will include an accessible law library and a selfhelp center. Also, incorporated in the plans is a lovely café space
that overlooks the memorial garden and green space. The café
and green space is designed to provide a welcoming area for staff
and members of the general public.
The materiality of the building will be a nod to the existing
King of Prussia Blue granite used for the historic courthouse
and annex. The newly constructed part of the justice center
will utilize multiple types of glass to maximize natural light -
and blend with the existing historic buildings. To achieve this
result, a new technology will be utilized that inserts translucent
panels of granite inside the glass. During the day there will be
plentiful natural light; at night the building will be beautifully
illuminated. Entire teams have been devoted just to lighting
in the Justice Center - one may be surprised that an entire
architectural career can be devoted simply (or not so simply) to
lighting!
Conveniently located across the street in One Montgomery
Plaza will be Office of the District Attorney and Office of the
Public Defender. The Adult Probation Department will remain
on Cherry Street adjacent to the campus. Juvenile Court will
remain at the Port Indian Road location with the Youth Center
Facility.
Change is coming...so there is no doubt that many things
- including parking - will be greatly impacted by the initial
demolition, extensive construction, and involved renovation.
Therefore, the court and county is diligently working on
operational plans and alternate parking for all staff and visitors
to the Montgomery County Courthouse.
The day demolition commences, 6 jury courtrooms will
be gone, and consequently, courtrooms will be built in One
Montgomery Plaza. There is no doubt that operationally things
will be very, very different - and challenging - during this time.
Upon completion in 2025, the Montgomery County Justice
Center will be a shining beacon of justice, ready to serve all who
seek assistance, fairness, and justice!
