Young Lawyers Section Participates
in Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Day of
Service and Other Updates
By Jennifer Franks Whitehurst, Esq.

T

he Young Lawyers Section
kicked off the year with a
number of exciting community
service events! On January 20th, the
Young Lawyers hosted several projects
in honor of Martin Luther King, Jr.
Montgomery Bar Association members
and their families celebrated Dr. King's legacy by volunteering at
the Interfaith Housing Alliance and
the Wissahickon Valley Boys and
Girls Club both located in Ambler,
PA.
The Interfaith Housing Alliance
provides emergency and transitional
shelter to families with children,
along with emergency food relief,
intensive case management, and
support services. Volunteers at
the Alliance location cleaned and
moved furniture, sorted donations,
and organized shared spaces in
the building. The Wissahickon
Valley Boys and Girls Club
offers recreational, afterschool,
and summer activities to young
people, particularly those in need.
Volunteers at the Boys and Girls
Club cleaned, organized, and
decorated the Club's classrooms and
hallways.
Thank you to our many member volunteers who made these
projects possible, including: Judge Mark A. Kearney, Judge
Andrea Duffy, Patrick Gibbons, Timothy Knowles, Joseph
McNelis, William Oleckna, Bruce Pancio, Lydia Terrill, Matthew
Brittenburg, Chelsea Dearden, Stewart Greenleaf, Jr., Kara
Hill, Michael Lyon, Ravi Mohan, Ryan Raymond, Christopher
Sperring, Robert Walper, Jennifer Whitehurst, and, our Bar
President, Patrick Kurtas.

In addition to the MLK Day of Service, the Young Lawyers
Section has once again adopted a Meals on Wheels route with
the Montgomery County Senior Adult Activities Center. On
the last Friday of each month, volunteers deliver meals to seniors
and homebound residents in the Norristown area. Meals on
Wheels is an important program in our community. The
recipients depend upon and look forward to the visits and meals.
Likewise, it is a remarkably positive and rewarding experience
for our volunteers. Thank you to
the following members who have
volunteered: Lydia Terrill, William
Oleckna, David Singh, Nicole
Manley, and Kevin McGrath.
If you missed the MLK Day of
Service or our first rounds of Meals
on Wheels, there will be plenty of
opportunities to get involved with
the Young Lawyers' service projects
this spring. In April, we will be
participating in Hatboro Horsham's
"Who Will I Be?" Career Expo in
Horsham, PA, where volunteers
will talk to students K-12 about
being a lawyer. In May, the Young
Lawyers will host its annual May
Month of Service, which includes
a variety of community service and
giving opportunities, including
volunteering at Cecil and Bean's
Soup Kitchen in Norristown, PA.
As with all YLS service projects, all MBA members are
welcomed to participate. If you are interested in volunteering
with Meals on Wheels or one of our other projects, or have
suggestions for volunteer opportunities, please reach out to
the YLS Community Outreach Director, Jen Whitehurst, at
jennifer.whitehurst@law.villanova.edu.
