RESTAURANT REVIEW

Ripplewood Whiskey

hen I was given the opportunity to do the SIDEBAR
restaurant review, I knew exactly which restaurant
to choose. Living in Lower Merion, I had heard a
lot of positive comments about Ripplewood Whiskey and Craft
located at 29 E. Lancaster Avenue in Ardmore. However, my
decision to recommend it as the restaurant for our next food
review was cemented after reading the review from one of the
region's most respected restaurant critics. For those who have
not read it, Ripplewood was given a three-bell review by Craig
LaBan, thus making it only the second restaurant in Lower
Merion to receive such a high rating. This trip to Ripplewood
with my co-writer was actually my third time there. My recon
proved helpful in deciding how best to attack the menu.
Ripplewood is actually two great experiences. It is both a
restaurant and a whiskey bar. Upon arriving, you enter the bar
area. It is evident from a look at the displayed bottles that the
liquor selection is broad and high end. In addition to the bar,
there are high top tables along the wall for diners. When making
a reservation, you are offered the option of either a traditional
table or a high top. The bar is well stocked with a wide variety of
whiskeys and bourbons.
After being seated, our server asked for our drink selection.
Though I am a beer drinker, I was tempted to try one of the

many specialty drinks. Being a creature of habit, I reverted back
to the beer menu. Each time I have gone to Ripplewood, the
selection of beers has changed, which provides you with the
opportunity to sample different types. My dining partner elected
to have their signature drink, the Ripp Manhattan. It was the
American classic, expertly prepared with Knob Creek Single Barrel,
Vermut Lustau and an orange twist.
The menu is broken into three sections: for the table; shareables;
and entrees. Because the menu offered so many great choices, we
decided to sample items from every category. In addition to the
items on the menu, our server advised us of the evening specials.
We elected to try as our first choice the scallop crudo ($15.00)
which fell under the shareable category. We were off to a good
start. The scallops were prepared perfectly; however, what made
the dish memorable was the vinaigrette, which was both salty
and sweet from the pomegranate seeds. The contrast between the
two was delicious. The second shareable dish was the tongue and
cheek tacos ($13.00). The order consisted of two tacos so it was
perfect for sharing. The veal tongue, which is paired with a beef
cheek marmalade, was perfectly cooked. The horseradish aioli and
pickled mustard seed was a perfect complement. Other items on
the shareable menu include pork ribs ($12.00) and grilled octopus
($17.00). The grilled octopus was recently featured in an article
recognizing it as one of the best octopus dishes in the area.
