Trial Lawyers
Section Update
By Justin A. Bayer, Esq., President, Trial Lawyers Section

W

hen my friend Bob Watson asked this past
November for the Trial Lawyers Section to
contribute an article to SIDEBAR, his mandate
was a broad one. Something that would be of interest to
the Trial Lawyers Section or to the general readership of
SIDEBAR. Having read the magazine for over 15 years, I
have a great appreciation for the legal sophistication of the
audience. Accordingly, my mind turned to various topics or
subject areas that the requested article could tackle.
It seemed that a prudent starting point would be to review
the last few years of CLE, seminars, speakers, and activities
that our Section organized to determine whether any would fit
neatly into an article. Perhaps an update on a practice area or
discovery tips that our Section or SIDEBAR readership would
find interesting?
We could submit an article with an update on medical
malpractice law. It would be easy to ask one of the luminaries
of the med-mal bar such as Dan Sherry, Frank Murphy, Bob
Morris, or Paul Troy to author something of interest. All have
generously contributed to our Section in the past few years.
Perhaps the article could be broader and encompass a bodily
injury claim or an auto accident case? Marc Steinberg, Judge
Walsh, or Nathan Murawsky have all enriched our Section
recently and would contribute again. Commercial litigation?
We could ask Tom Elliott, Melissa Murphy Weber, Stew
Greenleaf or our fellow Section officer, Aimee Kumer. They're
leaders and also recent contributors to our Section. Perhaps
instead an article on mediation strategy? Mike Shields, Judge
Furber, Judge Walsh or Judge Giordano are just a call or text
away. Each has graciously devoted time this year and would be
willing to help again, if asked.
Thinking that a practice area article might be too specific,
I looked out my window to our courthouse. When in doubt,

look to the courthouse. I quickly ran down the list of the
impressive Judges who spoke and presented to us over the
past few years. The list was overwhelming and includes our
own: Judge Del Ricci, Judge Rogers, Judge Murphy, Judge
Carluccio, Judge Haaz, Judge Weilheimer, Judge Rothstein,
Judge Saltz and Judge Sterling. Several members of our
bench presented multiple times to the Section in just the past
two years. We also heard from our District Attorney, Kevin
Steele, and were fortunate to learn from Judge Kearney and
many of his colleagues from the Eastern, and Middle District
as well as the Third Circuit Court of Appeals. We have no
better ambassador of the MBA than Judge Kearney. Court
Administration? Our distinguished Court Administrator,
Michael Kehs, his former deputy, Denise Vicario, and Matt
Pio all recently presented to our Section.
Instead of asking anyone to write something for the
Section, it seemed better to take this opportunity to thank
all those individuals on behalf of the Section. They devoted
countless hours to provide high quality CLE and discussions
for our Section. They distilled their knowledge and experience
into presentations to the great benefit of our members. They
deserve our gratitude and recognition.
Beyond those many members of our bench and bar who
have contributed to our Section, we have also benefited greatly
from the past leadership of Ethan O'Shea and Seth Wilson.
Our Section will continue its mission to foster friendship
within the trial bar, to improve the trial skills of its members
and to support the MBA. The future leadership of Bob
Nemeroff, Aimee Kumer and Mark Fischer will ably carry on
the Section's mission. Their hard work and sacrifice have made
the past efforts - and will make the future efforts - of the
Trial Lawyers Section a success.
