15 Ways to Relieve Stress & Stay Sane

as a Physician and/or Health Care Provider
1. Exercise daily for at least 30-45 minutes of brisk walking/jogging or
running. Add some weight lifting with small weights to keep muscles strong
2. Eat healthy with less carb and fat. More protein, fruits and vegetables.
Drink plenty of water.
3. Maintain normal or near normal weight
4. Alcohol or coffee intake in moderation and no tobacco use
5. Paint or sketch during your free time as these are few of my hobbies
6. Travel to different places to enjoy the beauty along with trekking or
hiking to stay in shape
7. Spend time with family - MAKE TIME FOR THE FAMILY even if it
seems there is no time in your schedule
8. Spend time for YOU - Meditations, mindfulness, Reiki, reading spiritual
books - whatever it takes to feel relaxed and healthy
9. Have enough regular sleep pattern
10. Attend professional development seminars and try to be more efficient
so that you have time for you and your family
11. Unless you stay healthy and stress free, you will not be able to provide
quality, effective and efficient care to your patients
12. Add swimming or cycling to your exercise schedule if possible. Play
some type of sport
13. Engage in community events
14. Volunteer your time as a health care provider to community events and
health screening events as it will increase your professional satisfaction
15. Make sure you feel fulfilled and not only successful as these are two
different things. People can be rich and successful but not fulfilled,
satisfied and happy.
CECELIA ALLISON is a first-year medical student at Geisinger Commonwealth School of Medicine. Cecelia grew up in the South Hills of
Pittsburgh and graduated from the University of Notre Dame with majors in Neuroscience and Spanish. In her free time, she enjoys practicing yoga
and traveling to new places.
