TRANSFORMATIONAL NEPA

he butterfly is the quintessential
symbol of transformation which
is why it was chosen by the ARTS
Engage! Task Force, a cross-sector collaborative imitative consisting of county
departments, social service agencies and
arts organizations, for an upcoming art
installation to be held in partnership
with the First Friday Scranton Health
Fair. The installation kicks off NEPA
Transform which will feature a series of
programs from June thru October around
the theme of personal and community
transformation. The mission of the ARTS
Engage! Task Force, a program facilitated by the Lackawanna County Arts and
Culture Department, is "to improve the
quality of life for Lackawanna County
residents through access to and participation in artistic, creative and cultural
experiences" so beginning the project in
conjunction with the Scranton Health Fair
was a perfect fit as it promotes health,
wellness and community.

Scotch boards drawn by local artists, a
community "Butterfly Dance" performed
by Ballet Theatre of Scranton and storytelling activities. A list of the other NEPA
Transform programs through the summer
and fall will also be available.

Community organizations, businesses,
schools and individuals are currently
painting the ceramic butterflies created
by Verve Vertu Arts Studio, part of The
Deutsche Institute in partnership with
Moscow Clayworks. There was an overwhelming response from the public to
part of the project and to date there have
been almost 2,000 butterflies painted. The
butterflies will be unveiled on the Linden
St. side of Courthouse Square and people
are encouraged to take a butterfly and
share their own story of transformation
on social media. In addition to the unveiling of the butterfly installation there will
be other activities including chalk Hop

MAUREEN MCGUIGAN is the Deputy Director for the Lackawanna County Arts and Culture Department in northeastern Pennsylvania where
she oversees a $1.3 million local tax generated fund for arts and culture programming and the operations of the Electric City Trolley Station and
Museum. She has worked in many facets of the non-profit arts sector throughout her career. Her areas of expertise include community building,
grant making and program design. She holds a B.A. in history from the University of Pittsburgh and an M.F.A. in creative writing from St. Mary's
College, California.
