than 36 million people in the world are
living with HIV infection, with more than
1.1 million cases in the U.S. The virus is
typically transmitted through unprotected
sexual contact (both hetero- and homosexual), sharing needles for injection drug
use, and from mother to child during birth.
Initial infection with HIV can be accompanied by the fever, sore throat, and muscle
aches that are typical of a viral illness
(think: the flu), however many infected
individuals experience no symptoms initially. The disease then enters a state of
"latency," in which there are no symptoms
of illness. This latent period can last for
years, during which time the virus slowly
destroys the host's immune system. When
enough damage is done to the immune
system, symptoms of viral illness begin
to reappear and can be accompanied by
atypical, "opportunistic" infections, which
take advantage of the host's weakened
ability to fight infection. At this point, the
disease has progressed to AIDS.
Thanks to the development of new and
highly effective antiviral drugs, many HIV
positive individuals in the U.S. are living longer, are free from symptoms of the illness,
and may even have undetectable levels of
the virus in their blood. However, there is
currently no cure for HIV and attempts at
creating a vaccine against the disease have
been met with a number of challenges, such
as the wide variability of the virus itself.
Malaria, RSV, and
others
The parasite causing malaria is spread by
the bite of a mosquito and, in 2015 alone,
was responsible for the death of more than
400,000 people worldwide. RSV is a highly
contagious and extremely common cause
of respiratory infections in young kids in
the U.S. Hookworms are tiny worms that
penetrate the skin of a human host and
then live and lay eggs in the intestines.
CMV infection in pregnant mothers can
cause deafness, intellectual disability, and
other complications in their babies.
It is clear to see the enormous impact
that developing vaccines for these illnesses
