Alcohol and All-Inclusive

W

hether it is spring break or a getaway from the harsh
Northeastern Pennsylvania winter, all-inclusive
resorts are a popular travel destination for people
of all ages. It is a great way to relax, escape from reality, and have
a memorable experience with family or friends. The benefit of
all-inclusive is that once you purchase your package unlimited
food and drinks are included at no extra cost. Although this may
sound great at first, it is important to drink responsibly for your
own safety and for the safety of those around you. I will share
some tips on how to have a safe yet enjoyable experience at an
all-inclusive resort.

A major concern with drinking alcohol is
dehydration primarily due to its diuretic
effects. Have you ever wondered why you have
to use the bathroom so often when you drink?
It is because alcohol blocks the reabsorption
of water at the collecting ducts of the kidney
leading to an excess excretion of water.

Dehydration can cause headache, lethargy, hypotension, and
lightheadedness. The best way to prevent dehydration is simple,
drink more water. I would recommend drinking one glass of water
after each alcoholic beverage consumed.

Binge drinking while at an all-inclusive also poses health risks.
Alcohol as a drug is classified as a depressant so it decreases central
nervous system activity. As a person becomes intoxicated they begin
to lose their coordination skills, their speech becomes slurred, and
they have changes in behavior. During this time it is important
to avoid engaging in activities such as jet skiing, ATV riding, and
the increasingly popular Segway tours. Though there may not be
official laws that prohibit people from engaging in such activities
