"The relationship between abuse, trauma and household dysfunction and risk factors for leading causes of death have been
replicated in hundreds of subsequent studies world-wide over
the 20 years since the original publication. Advances in neurobiology, brain imaging techniques, immunology and genetics have
shown a major effect on the development and function of the
developing brain that have profound, life-long effects on health,
mortality and risk factors," says Francis Dennis Dawgert, M.D.,
associate professor of pediatrics at Geisinger Commonwealth
School of Medicine.
"This symposium will explore how these issues and risks can be
addressed through a community effort. The stake holders in this
important public health education effort include medical professionals, medical trainees, educators. legal and law enforcement officers,
social workers and the general community," Dr. Dawgert said.
