Own set of tools
Each medical specialty has its own set of tools.
For example, an oncologist who is treating pancreatic cancer
might have a score that " helps them prognosticate, helps them figure
out the chance of dying, when you die and that might help them
guide treatment, " Habboushe said.
Emergency medical professionals such as Habboushe may have
a whole different set of rules.
" For example, how to handle someone who has chest pain, when
to send them home, when to keep them in the hospital, " Habboushe
said. " As more researchers create more tools and publish them, we
end up publishing them on MDCalc. We became a little bit of a
gold standard for these tools. So now when someone does research,
they'll reach out to us and say, hey, I just published this paper on this
new tool, can you publish on MDCalc yet? We will say, let's take a
look, you know, yours isn't validated well enough, so you have to
publish another paper before we place it in MDCalc. "
MDCalc will readily pop up on an internet search.
Medical professionals can enter inputs online or on their smartphone and receive a calculation with a set of instructions.
Integrating the rules took some time, according to Habboushe.
" Starting about four, or five years ago, medical centers started
reaching out to us, saying, hey, do you have the integrated versions
of your calculator? " he said.
About 80 different medical centers reached out to the company
within a couple of years. What MDCalc's owners found out is that
most information technology offices in large medical centers were
receiving requests from different doctors about building MDCalc
into hospital and treatment center electronic health records, so that
it auto-fills and is easy to save, and provides pop-up information.
'Integrate it'
" It goes into the chart, " Habboushe said. " Now you can integrate
it with the electronic health records. You can go to the chart and you
can grab some patient data from the chart and fill the calculator itself
and get the calculation right there. It reminds (medical professionals)
to use the right score. "
MDCalc does the kind of integration that hospitals are trying
to do, Habboushe said.
" We started receiving requests four or five years ago: Do you guys
have a solution? " he said. " So we started building that solution. "
The Cloud-based integration system does calculations while the
doctors are using the records.

Philadelphia Medicine : Winter-Spring 2021
" Trying to integrate a calculator into an electronic health record
is something almost every IT department is doing in big medical
centers, without reinventing the wheel on how to do it, " he said.
Habboushe provided an idea of how the integration works.
