see him as anything but a serious man of medicine. He pioneered
a lot of what is now taken for granted in radiation oncology. He
also helped train more than 250 residents, many of whom are
running radiation oncology departments today, or training residents
in other medical schools. "We had the first clinical department
graduation program in radiation physics and radiation biology
and radiation pharmaceutical chemistry."
He has served as president of every major professional society in
his field, including the American College of Radiation Oncology,
of which he was the founding president.
And he has not stopped working. Twelve years ago, he introduced Cyberknife technology to the Philadelphia area. "You're able
to get a more precise definition of the tumor's extent, through
diagnostic radiology, with computer controls, to identify the
tumor and develop a treatment plan, and then with small beams,
paint the radiation dose across the tumor. With very little in the
way of side-effects. More precision."
