Mark is married to Linda Rohrbach
Austerberry, a talented artist, and they reside
on his family's 100-acre farm with their
two dogs. They have two daughters, Emily
and Kaylee (married to Kyle Layton). They
recently became first-time grandparents to
granddaughter Avery Lynn Layton.
2020 Strittmatter Award
Robert H. Rosenwasser
The annual
Strittmatter Award
is the highest honor
presented to a physician
who has made
the most valuable
contribution to the
healing arts. Established
in 1923 by I.
P. Strittmatter, MD,
the award commends
the recipient's contribution to one of the fundamental
sciences of medicine, having a beneficial
influence on either surgery or medicine.
Robert H. Rosenwasser, MD, MBA,
FACS, FAHA, was born and raised in
Shreveport, La. He received his bachelor's
degree from Nicholls State University in
Thibodaux, La. and his MD from Louisiana
State University in Shreveport. Rosenwasser
completed a general surgery internship and
residency in neurological surgery at Temple
University Hospital. In 1984, he was a fellow
in neurovascular surgery under Drs. Drake
and Peerless at University of Western Ontario
in London, Ontario, and from 1992 to 1993,
he completed a fellowship in interventional
neuroradiology under Dr. Alex Berenstein
at New York University. Additionally, Rosenwasser
is certified in neurocritical care. In
2017, he completed his MBA in finance and
data analytics at Villanova University, and
a master's in analytics from The Wharton
School at the University of Pennsylvania.
Rosenwasser has held numerous academic
and hospital appointments and

is the current Jewell L. Osterholm, MD
Professor and Endowed Chairman in the
Department of Neurological Surgery, professor
of neuroscience, professor of radiology,
professor of neurovascular surgery, professor
of interventional neuroradiology, president
and CEO of the Farber Institute for Neuroscience,
medical director of the Jefferson
Neuroscience Network, senior vice president
of Jefferson Enterprise Neuroscience at Sidney
Kimmel Medical College of Thomas Jefferson
University and Thomas Jefferson University
Hospital for Neuroscience.
Rosenwasser continues to be involved
in research, particularly in neuroradiology
and neurosurgery cooperative projects. He
has published more than 500 peer-reviewed
publications, abstracts and book chapters
and has co-edited four textbooks on cerebral
ischemia, cerebral arteriovenous malformations
and interventional neuroradiology/
endovascular neurosurgery.
Rosenwasser is a member of numerous
medical organizations. He is past president
of the Society of University Neurosurgeons
and past chairman of the Joint Section on
Cerebrovascular Disease.
2021 Strittmatter Award
N. Scott Adzick
Dr. N. Scott
Adzick earned his
baccalaureate and
medical school
degrees from Harvard,
completed his
surgical residency at
Massachusetts General
Hospital and
his pediatric surgery
fellowship at Boston Children's Hospital.
He holds a masters of medical management
degree from Carnegie Mellon University.
Adzick was an attending surgeon at the
University of California San Francisco from
1988 until 1995, when he was recruited to
Children's Hospital of Philadelphia (CHOP).
He is the C. Everett Koop Professor of Pediatric
Surgery at CHOP and professor of surgery,
pediatrics, and obstetrics and gynecology
in the Perelman School of Medicine at the
University of Pennsylvania.
Adzick is an internationally recognized
pioneer in fetal surgery; he is the premier
pediatric general and thoracic surgeon of
his generation. Adzick has dedicated his
career to the pursuit of groundbreaking
prenatal treatments for life-threatening
and debilitating birth, including leading a
breakthrough study that demonstrated that
performing fetal surgery for spina bifida
results in significantly improved outcomes
compared to conventional postnatal repair.
Adzick lead the creation of the Garbose
Family Special Delivery Unit, the world's first
birth facility in a pediatric hospital specifically
designed for healthy mothers carrying babies
with known birth defects.
He is an active pediatric general and thoracic
surgeon, and he performs more than 400
operations a year. In addition to fetal surgery,
he performs surgery in newborns including
repairs for congenital diaphragmatic hernia,
abdominal wall defects, lung lesions and
other complex neonatal conditions.
As a part of the Congenital Hyperinsulinism
Center team, he has performed more
than 600 pancreatectomies - the most
of any surgeon in the world - and more
than 300 babies have been cured of focal
hyperinsulinism through surgery. He is also a
leader of the Pediatric Thyroid Center team,
which recently demonstrated that high thyroid
surgery volumes at CHOP are associated with
extremely low complication rates.
Adzick has had National Institutes of
Health grant support for more than 30 years.
He has authored more than 600 peer-reviewed
publications and has an h-index of 110. He
was elected to the National Academy of
Medicine in 1998. He was awarded the John
Scott Medal in 2013. Created in 1816, the
John Scott Medal is presented to men and
women whose inventions and innovations
improved the " comfort, welfare, and happiness
of humankind " in a significant way. Previous
recipients include Thomas Edison, Madame
Curie, the Wright Brothers, Nicola Tesla,
Edwin Land, Jonas Salk, Frederick Banting,
Guglielmo Marconi, Alexander Fleming, and
several Nobel Laureates.
In 2015, Adzick received the Samuel
D. Gross Prize, one of the oldest prizes for
surgery and surgical research in the world.
