A person-centered approach to care results in a calmer environment,
less resident falls and improved relationships between staff
and residents. In addition, people flourish in a person-centered
environment, often showing improved health and creating new
friendships.
In addition, at Meadow View, staffing assignments are also
person-centered. Rather than rotating through room assignments,
staff in the households at Garden Spot Village work with the same
people every day.
Garden Spot's person-centered approach is also found throughout
the interior design of Meadow View. Using recent research on
ways people with dementia can live resiliently, the team included
interior design elements to improve space recognition. For example,
each suite has a unique combination of front door, doorknob and
mailbox, and the two households have different color schemes.
These simple touches can help people with dementia subconsciously
recognize spaces that are familiar.
Karick reports that the visual and tactile clues have helped
residents successfully navigate the new community. " While we do
have a few residents who we need to redirect occasionally, for the
most part, we haven't had to worry about people wandering into the
wrong apartment. Subconsciously they know they are in the right
space, " she says.
Emerging technologies
Emerging technology, such as circadian lighting throughout the
community, is designed to help residents have more restful sleep and
increase daytime wakefulness. Motion sensor night lights in resident
bathrooms have also helped to improve resident sleep cycles.
Individual soundscapes help with overall mood and the rhythms
of daily life. Garden Spot Village partnered with Composure, an
emerging soundscape company that helps people achieve better
quality of life, care, and communication through music and sound.
The founders of Composure harness the power of soundscapes to
improve people's lives. What we hear affects our mental, physical
and neurological health and results are extremely positive. Decades
of research validates the transformative impact of music and sound
on overall well-being. Garden Spot's partnership with Composure
provides opportunity to use sound to help calm residents and create
a peaceful atmosphere.
Purposeful living
Garden Spot Village has also partnered with iN2L, a person-centered
technology company founded in 1999 in Denver, Colorado.
iN2L devices found throughout Meadow View allow residents to
learn, and interact with neighbors and family. iN2L pioneered the
use of content-driven engagement to create meaningful experiences
for older adults by connecting them to the world around them.
The leading provider of person-centered content to the senior living
market, iN2L is a critical part of the resident experience at Meadow
View.
Meadow View's Resilient Living Aides help to keep residents engaged.
The Town Square includes a beauty salon/barbershop, bistro,
chapel/theater, general store, fitness room and more. A full schedule
of opportunities allows residents to connect with each other for
meaningful activity and relationships.
Melody says, " We want to insert purposeful activity into people's
lives wherever we can. "
The community also includes five outdoor courtyards, sensory
gardens and walking paths. Outdoor activities in the main courtyard
include an interactive splash pad, beach area, sensory gardens and so
much more. Social gatherings including a book club, prayer group,
sewing club, craft club and memory café which provide opportunities
to connect and build community. *
