Root causes
Beard has also been actively involved in research, exploring the
root causes of gun violence. In June, Beard was named as a Stoneleigh
Fellow by the Philadelphia Center for Gun Violence Reporting and
the Stoneleigh Foundation, for a three-year fellowship to study gun
violence, seeking to provide context, solutions and varying perspectives.
" We believe that if the public is better informed about the
epidemiology, root causes and solutions for gun violence, this could
ultimately lead to increased support for policies and programs to
prevent gun violence, " Beard said.
Beard would like the city to develop leadership and coordination
about what an approach to gun violence is, or could be.
" I think the city has already solidified an investment in community
organizations, and I am hopeful about that, " she said. " I am looking
forward to see what gets funded and what intervention looks like. "
But she would also like to see a response from the public health
perspective to begin to address gun violence as a public health problem.
" This is always a challenge to deal with and is emotionally taxing, "
Beard said. " The recent surge has caused exponential challenges
and stress for us. Our goal will be for the public to understand gun
violence in a more in-depth way and understand solutions. "
