T

he 2017 Annual American Medical Association (AMA) House of
Delegates Conference was held in Chicago, June 10-14. The AMA
House of Delegates (HOD) is the principal policy-making body of
the AMA. The conference had approximately 1200 attendees with more
than 500 delegates present from all 50 states, specialty societies, and U.S.
territorial possessions, along with alternate delegates. (www.ama-assn.org/
hod-annual-overview)

In addition to HOD sessions, there were several educational sessions,
lectures, special events, and meetings of specialty and subspecialty sections
of the Association. (Member organizations of the AMA House of Delegates
www.ama-assn.org/member-organizations-ama-house-delegates)
The structure of the AMA is further subdivided by the following councils:
* Constitution and Bylaws
* Ethical and Judicial Affairs
* Legislation
* Medical Education
* Medical Service
* Science and Public Health
* AMPAC
The 2017 election for president-elect of the AMA was between two
admired and accomplished physicians. Barbara McAneney, MD, defeated
Steve Permut, MD, JD, a board member of our own Philadelphia County
Medical Society. McAneney and Permut both were longstanding members
of the AMA Board of Trustees (see inserts).
The Pennsylvania Medical Society works within the larger group of the
Great Lakes States Coalition, which is also composed of Illinois, Indiana,
Michigan, New York and Ohio. Most of the states are organized under larger
sectional coalitions.
Policy is formulated at the House of Delegates through resolutions bought
to the reference committees.
The reference committees are:
* Committee on Amendments to Constitution and Bylaws
* Medical Services
* Legislation
* Medical Education
* Public Health
* Science and Technology
* AMA Finance and Governance
* Medical Practice
The reference committees had hearings on over 150 resolutions that were reviewed and analyzed, and compared existing AMA policy. The results of their work
were presented on the floor of the House of Delegates for debate and voting. *
