In 1923, The Philadelphia County Medical Society (PCMS)
created the Strittmatter Award, one of the most prestigious
prizes in U.S. medicine. The award is funded through a PCMS
trust fund created by Dr. Isidor Strittmatter. Each year the gold
medal is presented to a physician who has made a valuable contribution to remedial measures, surgical or medical, or to one of
the fundamental sciences of medicine - a contribution that has
produced a beneficial influence on either medicine or surgery.
The 2017 STRITTMATTER AWARD RECIPIENT: Mark L. Tykocinski, MD
Mark L. Tykocinski, MD, is provost and executive vice president for Academic Affairs,
Thomas Jefferson University, and the Anthony F. and Gertrude M. DePalma dean of the
university's Sidney Kimmel Medical College. He also served as president of Jefferson
University Physicians for over five years.
Before joining Jefferson in 2008, Dr. Tykocinski was professor and chair of the Department of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine at the University of Pennsylvania for a decade.
Under his leadership, it became the leading NIH-funded department of its kind in the
country, featuring signature training programs and a strong commercialization incubator.
Dr. Tykocinski's research contributions have been in the fields of molecular immunology,
cell surface engineering, and biologics innovation. He has pioneered new categories of
fusion protein pharmaceuticals, with applications to cancer and autoimmune diseases.
Drawing on his significant patent portfolio, Dr. Tykocinski founded KAHR-Medical in
2007, an Israeli biotech company focused on first-of-its-kind therapeutic fusion proteins.
Dr. Tykocinski's scientific contributions also extend to areas such as immunoregulation,
cellular therapeutics, and gene therapy, including development of a novel class of mammalian expression vectors now distributed worldwide.
Dr. Tykocinski is past president of two of the leading societies in the field of academic
pathology: the American Society for Investigative Pathology/FASEB and the Association
of Pathology Chairs. He has been called upon as a consultant and external reviewer for
numerous academic medical centers, and has served on various editorial boards. Dr.
Tykocinski was honored with the Warner-Lambert/Parke-Davis Award for Outstanding
Research from ASIP/FASEB.
Dr. Tykocinski grew up in the New Jersey countryside, the son of Holocaust survivors.
A biology major at Yale, he received his MD from New York University. After medicine
internship at Columbia-Presbyterian Medical Center and anatomic pathology residency
back at NYU, he did his postdoctoral training at NIAID/NIH in Bethesda, cloning genes
of immunological interest. As a faculty member at Case Western Reserve University, he
founded the gene therapy facility there in the early days of that emerging field. Dr. Tykocinski takes pride in his lifetime mentors, including Dr. Bernard Lown (1985 Nobel Peace
Prize laureate) and Dr. Michael Lamm (pioneer in the field of secretory immunology).
Dr. Tykocinski is married to Judith S. Tykocinski, Esq., whose career has taken her
to prominent law firms and international consulting firms. They have four children -
Gabriella, Elana, Dana and David - and four grandchildren. *

Congratulations, Dr. Tykocinski...

The Philadelphia County Medical Society is very proud to add
the Strittmatter Award to your many accomplishments!
