Dr. Cristol Installed
as new PCMS President

Says He Will Give Physician
Burnout High Priority
By: Alan Miceli, Editor

n his acceptance speech at the PCMS annual installation dinner,
new PCMS president, Dr. James L. Cristol, said the pressure
put on physicians to examine more patients per hour than has
been deemed acceptable in the past, "is not part of traditional
medical school curriculum, and is antithetical to the reasons most
of us chose a medical career."

Presidential Address of
James L. Cristol, MD,
new PCMS President

He said the increased patient visits and associated increased IT
tasks have added to the already heavy workload doctors have. He
cited a NorCal study that found that nearly half of doctors surveyed
work more than 11 hours a week just on electronic medical records.
"For doctors who don't have resources to train and increase
office staff, this insidious 'administrative creep' workload greatly
contributes to what we now call physician burnout."
Dr. Cristol said doctors now burn out at a higher rate than the
general population and have a higher rate of suicide than almost
any other profession. "In the USA," he said, "one doctor per day
commits suicide."
Dr. Cristol referred to studies that show that anywhere from
one third to two-thirds of physicians experience burnout at some
time in their career. He said the symptoms are: emotional exhaustion, emotional detachment or loss of empathy, feeling useless or
meaningless, work is taking over one's life, a growing tendency to
make mistakes.
Dr. Cristol concluded, "I do believe that physician burnout
is real, and largely a consequence of the transition to EMR/EHR.
Indeed, burnout is economically harmful to medical practice,
inherently dangerous to physician wellness, and if health care costs
are ever able to be reined in, EMR/EHR must become less of a
chore, less of a burden and more of a positive partner to all of us
physicians - and as soon as possible.
"Hopefully, we at PCMS can promote and encourage such change."
