A PCMS Response to Covid-19
"Help the Helper"

T
he pandemic has put unprecedented pressure on our health
care providers. Many of them have had to work very long
shifts in dangerous conditions. The crisis has exacerbated
what has become an acknowledged problem in the health care
community - burnout.
The Philadelphia County Medical Society has partnered with
the Chester and Delaware County Medical Societies and Springfield
Psychology to provide support group sessions for those on the
Covid-19 frontline.
"Help the Helper" was created to provide unity, solidarity and
emotional support to promote the overall well-being of our local
providers. Part of its mandate is to blunt the tragedy of physician
suicide. In the U.S. each year, 300 to 400 physicians take their own
lives - more than double the rising rate in the general population.
The "Help the Helper" one-hour video sessions were on Thursday

nights. They began at the end of April and ran through May, on a virtual
meeting platform. The sessions were open to all frontline workers,
offering emotional support, encouragement and compassionate and
self-care strategies. The initial flyer generated more than 95 signups.
Each week, the sessions attracted about 30 providers. Springfield
Psychology co-facilitated the support sessions with two professional
licensed clinicians.
When the sessions ended on Memorial Day, PCMS obtained
additional financial support from the Foundation for Delaware
County to continue the program. New sessions begin at the end
of July and will be divided into four subgroups: physicians, nurses,
first responders, and nursing home and long-term care support staff.
Each 90-minute group session is designed to run for up to 12
weeks and could accommodate up to 100 medical providers. Surveys
would be distributed to help counselors more closely meet the needs
