Is your practice leaving
money on the table?
The 2018 budget increases funding for such programs
by $103 million, and also includes $500 million set aside
during the Obama administration for use in 2018. Yet, at
the same time, the budget cuts funding for Medicaid, which
according to the Kaiser Family Foundation, covered three in
10 people with opioid addiction in 2015. Critics argue that
the health care budget cuts will undermine the additional
funding earmarked for the opioid epidemic. Government
health agencies such as the National Institutes of Health will
also see reduced funding.
The money in the federal budget for 2018, while an
increase from last year, is still far less than what is needed
to put a stop to opioid addiction. However, it puts the
epidemic in the spotlight and offers the promise that the
Trump administration will treat the epidemic as a priority
in the years to come.
The budget for 2019 will be critical in solidifying the
president's intentions of combating the crisis, as there will
not be a buffer from the Obama administration to assist
in funding as is the case for 2018. Will funding for opioid
addiction treatment and prevention remain consistent in
2019, despite this year's cuts to the health care budget? If
the promise that comes from the public health emergency
designation is to be taken seriously, it must. *
