PVMA Keystone Veterinarian Fall 2021 - 19

You must put yourself first! If you think it is
selfish to consider your needs before the needs
of others, how can you expect anyone else to
consider your needs important? Most, if not all,
of us have been on an airplane where the flight
attendant will say, " Please place the oxygen
mask on yourself before assisting others. " Little did you know we
learn a very important life lesson while boarding an airplane. If
you have no oxygen to breathe, you will not be helpful to others
around you.
Recent journals, online articles, and social media posts have
been full of information on wellness and self-care more than
ever before. Lack of self-care is not a " post-pandemic " issue.
For many, many years I have watched veterinary professionals
spread themselves so thin that they had nothing left for
themselves.
As a practice manager, I find that helping my team improve
themselves and their quality of life is extremely satisfying.

happy is a daily task and may take years to achieve.

things that bring them joy. There are many ways to
find happiness depending on your lifestyle, but it is
hard work. Once you find happiness for yourself, you can then
begin guiding others.
Let me share a piece of my 2020-2021 wellness journey with
you. I took a tough situation for me and my team and used it for
motivation and growth. I lost 20% of my team, including a team
leader, to the tolls of the veterinary profession compounded
with the stressors of the pandemic. We shared almost a decade
of professional and personal failures and achievements. The
challenges of the pandemic and curbside care, on top of other
life demands, made these team members feel overwhelmed
and burned out. In order for them to find happiness, leaving the
practice was a difficult but important choice. How would we go
on without them?
For each of the challenges we encountered, we armored up and
moved forward with new innovative ways to improve our day
to day. In the end, all parties involved in this dramatic change
came out with new meaning to work and life. Each day at the
practice is a new day! Fresh, new ideas have come to life. Those
