PVMA Keystone Veterinarian Spring 2020 - 10

What's all this talk about

Grassroots and
Grasstops?
By Mary Jane McNamee, JD, VMD

Chair of Legislative & Regulatory Affairs Committee (LRAC)

One of our main objectives at PVMA is to advocate
for you, our members. Hopefully, you appreciate
the importance of the work that PVMA is doing on
your behalf in Harrisburg, as I reported in the last
issue of Keystone Veterinarian.

farming, animal welfare or even the opioid crisis
during an office visit or farm call. Let us help support
you with infographics, position statements, or even
general training in advocacy in crafting your message
and personalized story.

Perhaps now you are wondering, "How can I help
more?" It's a great question, and one I asked myself
almost 10 years ago. I made the decision to become
a grasstop, and joined PVMA's LRAC.

As always, if you wish to join the policy discussion
or assist in visits at the Capitol, please email me at
MJMcNamee@PaVMA.org.

In advocacy-speak, a grasstop supporter is one actively engaged
in lobbying efforts. Basically, this means that I collaborate with
our lobbyist, Ms. Patricia Mackavage, Executive Director of
Duane Morris Government Strategies in Harrisburg. We make
in-person visits with lawmakers and their staff, in an effort
to educate and inform about topics of importance to our
profession. For me, it is extremely professionally and personally
rewarding to actively engage in influencing the legislative
process.
I encourage you to give it a try. If you don't have time to come
to Harrisburg, that's OK. In many ways, in-person visits to your
Representative's or Senator's District office may be just as or
more effective. Often times, staff members in the district offices
spend more day-to-day and downtime with lawmakers. You may
have a more meaningful visit, in a less hectic and distracting
environment than the Capitol.
Along those lines, please email us at Membership@PaVMA.org
if you already have a grasstops relationship with a state
lawmaker. Many of us already have a bond of respect with state
lawmakers, serving as veterinarian for their pets and livestock.

If grasstops advocacy is not for you, I get it! You can
support the veterinary profession by becoming a grassroots
supporter for the grasstop efforts. There are several ways to
get more involved. There may be times, as legislation is moving
forward, that PVMA will request a personalized email or a phone
call to your legislator. Lawmakers listen to their constituents -
you really can make a difference.
Most importantly, an effective way to be a grassroots supporter
is through your donation to Pennsylvania Veterinary Political
Action Campaign (PVPAC). Any donation amount is very much
appreciated. A call for donations is included in this issue on page 11.
As always, thank you for your support. We truly count on you.

To donate your time and expertise towards our efforts
for the profession and for the best lives
for Pennsylvania's pets and livestock, please
email me at MJMcNamee@PaVMA.org.
Respectfully,
MJ McNamee, JD, VMD
