PVMA Keystone Veterinarian Spring 2020 - 13

Third, get to know several beekeepers. Most beekeepers
will be willing to develop a relationship if you reach out to
them. Shadow several beekeepers. Attend a beekeeping class.
Take a poll of your clients. You might be surprised how many
"backyard" beekeepers you may find, and most of them could
use our help. Commercial beekeepers committed to best
practices will be happy to have a bee-educated veterinarian
working with them.

Finally, within our community, take action that
can help honey bees and native pollinators:
Plant native, pollinator friendly gardens and trees.
Be a lazy gardener: mow high and less, let dandelions
and other flowers to bloom, leave garden debris in
flower beds to support overwintering pollinators.
Eliminate or reduce pesticide use. Follow directions.
Support local beekeepers by buying local honey.
Ask if you can visit their facilities or farm.

About Dr. Tracy Farone: She is a Professor of Biology at Grove City
College. Dr. Farone recently completed a sabbatical to pursue
apicultural studies and develop a small teaching/research apiary at the
College. She traveled to Europe and Canada, to study with bee experts.
In the States, Dr. Farone worked in the field with multiple beekeepers,
including work with large, migratory, commercial beekeeping
operations. Dr. Farone has delivered bee lectures for PSU Veterinary
Extension, the PVMA, various bee clubs, and developed an educational
website (pabeevet.com). She has CE events planned in 2020 with the
Pennsylvania Veterinary Medical Association and the AVMA.

Veterinarians are well educated in biology, animal disease,
agricultural animal care and management, biosecurity,
judicious use of medications, and building client relationships.
These skills make us valuable players in agriculture and public
OFFERS health. We should be confident in joining the team to help
manage honey bee health.
