Veterinary Nurse
Initiative (VNI)
Update from the Task
Force Co-Chairs
In 2017, the National Association of Veterinary Technicians
in America (NAVTA) rolled out the Veterinary Nurse Initiative
(VNI). At Harcum College, home of one of the oldest veterinary
technology programs in the country, the VNI represented
everything we support for our profession. The goals of the VNI,
which include nationally standardized education requirements,
scope of practice, continuing education standards and title,
represent the path forward to better public understanding,
higher salaries, increased job satisfaction and most of all,
improved quality of care for our patients.
As our students complete their clinical rotations at
the University of Pennsylvania Veterinary Hospitals,
they are trained by the highly-skilled members of the
veterinary nursing staff there. The VNI is a natural fit
for the high standard of veterinary care and spirit of
cooperative team medicine taught at Harcum and
practiced at Penn Vet.
So, with strong support from NAVTA and Penn Vet,
we moved into the future as the Harcum College
Veterinary Nursing Program. We then brought together
those who share our goal of creating the best possible

opportunity to address issues faced by veterinary technicians in
the state of Pennsylvania. Program directors from Pennsylvania
and New Jersey, our NAVTA district representative and the
president of NAVTA, our veterinary partners in the area, staff
from Penn Vet, and the executive members of the Pennsylvania
Veterinary Medical Association (PVMA) all met at Harcum in
November of 2019. This meeting created an excitement about
the VNI that has invigorated students and faculty across the state.
Representatives returned to their respective institutions with a
greater understanding of the educational value of the VNI, the
importance of legislation that includes title protection for us as
registered veterinary nurses, and the road forward for
our profession. We would like to see Pennsylvania lead
the way, and we would like to engage all veterinarians,
veterinary technicians, and veterinary assistants in this
very important initiative.
