On behalf of the PVMA Veterinary Nursing
Initiative (VNI) Task Force, a survey
regarding the VNI was recently released.
In addition to the information gathered
at the Veterinary Nursing Summit held in
November, this survey was used to gain
information that could be presented to
the Board of Trustees, to request that the
PVMA take a formal stance on the VNI.
The survey results showed strong favor
for VNI.
Results for questions indicating key points
of the VNI are as follows:
1. Do you support a national
standardization of credentialing
requirements to include graduation
from an AVMA accredited program
of study and passing the Veterinary
Technician National Exam (VTNE)?
* 91% - voted yes (450 responses)
* 5% - voted no (25 responses)
* 3.7% - voted unsure (18 responses)
2. Do you support a national
standardization of scope of practice
for veterinary technicians?
* 89% - voted yes (442 responses)
* 4% - voted no (21 responses)
* 6.5% - voted not sure (32
responses)

(12 responses)
4. Do you support a national

Veterinary Nurse (RVN) with title
protection?
* 85% - voted yes (421 responses)
* 7.7% - voted no (38 responses)
* 7.3% - voted not sure
(36 responses)
5. What title would you like to see used
nationally?
* Certified Veterinary Technician (CVT)
- 5% (25 responses)
* Registered Veterinary Technician
(RVT) - 3.7% (18 responses)

(376 responses)
* No support of the VNI - 4%
(18 responses)
* Support for the VNI but neutral on
the title - 20% (99 responses)
With the overwhelming support of the
VNI that was seen from the VNI Summit
and the PVMA VNI survey, the Board of
Trustees was presented the information
and asked to vote on a formal stance in
support of the VNI. The Board approved
and the PVMA is now in support of
the VNI. The PVMA VNI Task Force will
now be working with our Legislative
& Regulatory Affairs Committee to
determine the next step for veterinary
technicians in
Pennsylvania.
