PVMA Keystone Veterinarian Spring 2021 - 20

Meet PVMA's
Diversity, Equity &
Inclusion Committee
PVMA is proud to introduce its Diversity, Equity & Inclusion (DEI) Committee. We will be introducing you to the committee
members over the next few issues of the Keystone Veterinarian. This committee came to fruition from last year's Annual
Membership Meeting when PVMA was asked what role it played in promoting diversity in the profession. It is well known
that veterinary medicine is one of the least culturally and ethnically diverse professions in America.1 PVMA is committed to
SUPPORTING CHANGE and leading the charge. The purpose of this new group will be to assess the current Diversity, Equity, and
Inclusion of PVMA, using the Multicultural Veterinary Medical Association's DEI recommendations to the AVMA, and begin steps
to improve its DEI with Members. While the committee works together on the back end to formulate improvements, we would
like to introduce you to some of them and see why they got involved.

Why were you interested in joining PVMA's DEI Committee?
Laura Cincotti, DVM, MS

It was an opportunity to become
involved in developing initiatives to
help understand and include everyone
in veterinary medicine as we chart our
course in this ever-changing world.
Recent events have highlighted this
need more than ever.
About Laura:
Dr. Cincotti is a Pennsylvania native,
hailing from Philadelphia. She attended Frostburg State
University for her Master's degree in wildlife biology and then
continued her education at the Virginia-Maryland Regional
College of Veterinary Medicine for her doctorate. Dr. Cincotti has
interests in feline and canine medicine, dentistry, and palliative/
hospice care. In her free time, she enjoys scuba diving, the
outdoors, desserts, and spending time with her own herd of cats
(and fish) at home.

Anjilla Cooley, DVM, MS

As a woman, and one of color, I bring
a firsthand perspective of being an
obvious minority in all my training
outside of my college experience.
I desire to share insight with the
committee to reach out to others who
are underrepresented and to generate
opportunities as well as connections to
create a colorful, inclusive future for the
veterinary field in Pennsylvania.
About Anjilla:
While her birth state is Ohio, she spent most of her precollege educational years in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania, where
she graduated from Susquehanna Township High School. Her
Southern heritage drew her to a pre-veterinary program at the
historically black college/university, North Carolina Agricultural
and Technical State University, where she studied Laboratory
Animal Science. She acquired her Doctorate of Veterinary
Medicine at the University of Tennessee and then successfully
completed a small animal internship at the University of
Missouri. She completed a small animal surgery residency
and obtained a Master's in Veterinary Science at the VirginiaMaryland College of Veterinary Medicine. She enjoyed teaching
for several years at Cornell, then ventured into referral hospital
practices in Pennsylvania and New Jersey, as well as created a
traveling surgical service in 1999. In 2018 she and her husband/
partner rebooted the mobile surgical service as " Cool Vet, LLP. "
Travel, meditation, yoga, and maintaining a healthy lifestyle are
her " hobbies. "
