PVMA Keystone Veterinarian Spring 2021 - 6

A Message from the President

Why get involved?

Delinda Zehner, DVM
President,
Pennsylvania Veterinary
Medical Association

Although there are many people who join
organizations such as PVMA, what makes a
person go from being a Member to a Leader?
Is it for the experience? The notoriety? The
relationships that develop? Or merely a drive
to help and protect the profession of veterinary
medicine?
For me it started out as an opportunity to
become a better leader for my private practice,
but as I met more of the leaders involved in
PVMA, I understood more about why they
were involved and what they were trying to
accomplish for the profession. Personally,
before I became involved in the Power of 10
scholarship program, I didn't realize what
the organization did, other than provide
opportunities for continuing education (CE)
credits from conferences and a resume booster
stating that I was a member. Thinking back
to when my dad was involved in the PA Farm
Bureau, I didn't know at the time that he was
involved in order to protect his livelihood and
profession of being a farmer. I thought he just
did it for the free dinners and to chat with
other farmers as a means of socialization. In
turn he was, but there was a reason behind
it. That social interaction that happens when
you discuss the good, the bad, and the ugly
with those in a similar profession, provides
direction to future leaders on what issues are
important and in need of repair. It also gives
you confidence that you are not alone in all of
this.

How do I get involved?
Even if you are not interested in becoming
an elected official, there are plenty of
other opportunities behind the scenes for
involvement. We have multiple committees

depending on what your interests are that
include the new Bylaws Committee, Education
Committee, Diversity, Equity & Inclusion (DEI)
Committee, Animal Care PA, Legislative and
Regulatory Affairs Committee (LRAC), and the
Veterinary Nurse Initiative (VNI). As you can
see from the many PVMA Committees, we
are more than just CE opportunities! One of
the first in-person conferences that I attended
after my VP election in 2018 was the AVMA
Veterinary Leadership Conference (VLC). The
conference is for veterinary professionals
at every career stage who are interested
in engaging with veterinary organizations.
Attending VLC changed my perspective about
veterinary leadership, opened my eyes to how
changes in legislation affect our profession,
and provided an area to network and exchange
ideas. I also learned effective communication
skills that I could utilize with clients and
coworkers.

What's next?
It's hard to believe we have been dealing with
COVID-19 for over a year now. Never would I
have imagined a year ago how our lives would
be different: the lives lost, the sick, jobs lost,
and financial upset. Between masks, social
distancing, isolation from family, and navigating
curbside, so many things were changing almost
daily. PVMA did a fantastic job answering
questions and keeping the Members informed
in what seemed like changes every week. This
past year has proven that PVMA is a wealth of
information and a place to turn when you are
looking for answers. We will get through this.
I am eagerly anticipating meeting in person
again later this year (KVC in November!!)
to reconnect and form the bonds that are
so important for us and our Members. Best
wishes for an awesome 2021!
