Practice Pearls
The Benefit
of Outsourcing
Human Resources
By Sam Boore
Founder & CEO of Focus HRO
In a 1944 book titled Psychology for
Musicians you will find the quote - "An
amateur practices until he can do a thing
right, a professional until he can't do it
wrong." Growing up in a championship
band, and later helping teach during
my own children's marching band
years later, you could often hear the
instructors shouting "PDR" - Practice, Drill, Rehearse. Or, "Do
it again, and this time do it better!" The bands that perfected
the perfect practice and did it until they could not do it wrong
were most often the bands taking home the top awards and
accolades - and I assure you the drive back to the school was
always more fun when you had a few awards on the bus to take
back with you, for both the students and the instructors.
The way we run a business is no different than the way a
director leads a marching band. And the goal for both is the
same - to fine tune the process so that there are zero mistakes,
and perfect the final product so that it is unmatched and
unapparelled in our field. We want to provide the best customer
service and experience to make sure our reputation is positive in
the community, and to gain more clients through word of mouth
referrals. This is how business grows, and I'm sure we would
prefer this over frustrating customer experiences, losing clients,
and a failing business. I mean, what business doesn't want to
hang their trophies in their lobby for their customers to see?
If you've ever watched a championship marching band during
a competition, you can sit back in amazement and see the
clean, straight lines, and the surprising transition to a crisscross
pattern amongst waves of matched movement. Everyone is in
step, facing front, with their chins held high to the press box.
Their instruments are shined, and you won't find a scuff on their
shoes. Their white gloves taped accurately - they have their
game faces on. But what most spectators fail to recognize is that
these kids have had their game faces on for three months or
more. They have been practicing 4-5 nights a week, committing
an average of 35 hours a week during their band camp, and 25
hours per week once school starts - all in an effort to perfect
their performance.
What else is not seen is the way 150 kids come together in the
beginning of the year with a brand-new beginning. They don't
know all of the people, or what the show (product) will be. They
don't have the music or drill. Most of them have never shined
shoes before, or taped gloves, and the incoming freshmen
certainly don't know what "game face" means or the long hours
that lie ahead. They just show up to do a job. And slowly, over
time, they begin learning not only their music and where to
march, but they begin to learn that they are much more than
their individual contribution - they are part of a team. They
have become part of the culture and share the same values and
mission as the other 149 students and their instructors. Success
has been redefined for them, and they radiate.
