Questions?
Pharmacists should also be aware that veterinary-specific insulins exist and are U-40. Please verify
the type of insulin that the pet is on before dispensing syringes to avoid dosing errors between
U-40 and U-100 insulins.

Insulin
Veterinarians carefully select the type of insulin prescribed to each patient based on speciesdependent responses to different products. Part of our conversation with clients includes the
cost of insulin as we know that some insulin products are available without a prescription and
are often less expensive. If a client has a concern about the cost or type of insulin they have
been prescribed, please advise them to contact their veterinarian to discuss the best options.
Common medications that have large dosing differences include levothyroxine and phenobarbital.
Some medications have large differences in dosing or side effects between humans and animals. We recommend having
a veterinary drug reference, such as Plumb's Veterinary Drug Handbook, available at your pharmacy or contact the prescribing
veterinarian with any concerns prior to discussing them with a client.
Species-Specific Differences
Many human NSAIDs are HIGHLY toxic to veterinary patients.
Use of human OTC medications in pets is always off-label and therefore, cannot be
recommended by a pharmacist. If asked, pharmacists should only advise clients to
consult the prescribing veterinarian regarding OTC medications.
