Telehealth Counseling -
A Virtual Path to Recovery
T

by David Loveland, Ph.D., Senior Program Director, Community Care Behavioral Health
he COVID-19 Pandemic has added more barriers
and challenges for people who want help for their
substance use disorder (SUD). Fortunately, people
with a SUD and their family members can access help
through the web as well as through telehealth options. If you
are thinking of seeking help for your SUD or you know of a
loved one who needs help, you have several effective options.

Nearly all outpatient SUD treatment providers in PA now
offer telehealth treatment, which means that you can receive
help for your SUD, without having to walk into an office
building. Telehealth is defined as any service provided
through the phone, video conferencing (e.g., Zoom
meetings), texting, email, smart-phone apps, or web-based
programs. You may have heard of the terms " e-therapy " or
" telepsychiatry " , which are the same as telehealth; it is any
treatment that is delivered outside of a face-to-face meeting.
The most common form of telehealth is phone or video.
You can call a SUD treatment program and complete your
enrollment process by phone or video; even your signature
can be acquired through digital applications on your smart
