Serrano Restaurant may be one of the area's
best kept secrets, especially when you realize
part of the menu includes authentic Peruvian recipes.
Over 30 years ago, surrounded by the gifts and skills of
his brothers, sisters, uncles, aunts, and cousins, Torres
put them all together and saw the building blocks
for a restaurant business. In the beginning, he was
owner, manager, head chef, maintenance man, human
resource manager and more. Soon a business was born
with its humble beginnings as a stand at a local York
fairground. El Chalan served up tasty kebobs and
tacos that were the product of terrific family recipes.
It didn't take long for the stand to develop a following
and with the encouragement of loyal customers Torres
opened his first restaurant in York in 1987. The first
restaurant proved unsuccessful and learning from his
mistakes, one of the things Torres recognized was that
he needed a change in location. He moved to the East
side of York and that was the beginning of El Serrano.
When the East York business grew, he bought a
nightclub in Lancaster and turned it into the second El
Serrano. Chef school, fourteen years and five additions
later, the original nightclub is barely recognizable in
the structure that now engulfs it. As you approach
