Narrative Medicine, continued from page 9
doing he asks the reader to consider the complex journey of life
we experience in the solitude of our own hearts and the moments
in life that draw us out of that solitude to connect us to each other.
"A hummingbird's heart beats ten times a second. A hummingbird's
heart is the size of a pencil eraser. A hummingbird's heart is a lot of
the hummingbird...Each one visits a thousand flowers a day. They can
dive at sixty miles an hour. They can fly backward. They can fly more
than five hundred miles without pausing to rest... Hummingbirds,
like all flying birds but more so, have incredible enormous immense
ferocious metabolisms. To drive these metabolisms they have race-car
hearts that eat oxygen at an eye-popping rate...It's expensive to fly..."
In this era of COVID-19, Narrative Medicine can help all
health caring professionals on the front line of care and those
trying to lead the teams, cope with the incredibly "complex
journey of life." During times of severe illness that demand
connection, social distancing and isolation remove the primary
personal supports that our patients, and even we ourselves rely on.
The volume of severe illness has overwhelmed even hospice teams
who are accustomed to dealing daily with death.
Caregivers, patients and families must retreat into the solitude
of one's own heart, reflecting deeply, searching for strength and
vision that allows them to face another day. It is in those moments
of solitude, in the recesses of our hearts, minds and souls, that we
will find the strength to emerge from that solitude and to connect
with those we are called to serve, and with those who join us in the
task. Narrative Medicine cultivates this necessary reflection and
discernment. It keeps us fresh, empowers us to keep showing up
and to remain present to the patients and families under our care
and those who join us in this mission.
Growing the body of knowledge
When we started the Narrative Medicine program at
WellSpan York Hospital the goals were to promote professional
development, especially for our many learners, cultivate reflective
practice predicated on the virtue of compassion, create a space
for a community of compassionate health caring professionals
to share their experience, and provide a refreshment from the
stresses of daily work in health care. We are conducting a formal
study examining the impact of the program on our residents'
professional development and well-being and their capacity to
engage with patients. We hope to add to the body of knowledge of
this discipline. What is already known is that Narrative Medicine
promotes greater affiliation with patients and colleagues, a deeper
curiosity about what we witness and about what we undergo in
the course of our work, and an enhanced sense of beauty to be
found in the work we do.

They tried to make me go to rehab but I said, 'No, no, no.'
Yes, I've been black but when I come back you'll know, know, know
I ain't got the time and if my daddy thinks I'm fine
He's tried to make me go to rehab but I won't go, go, go
I'd rather be at home with ray
I ain't got seventy days
'Cause there's nothing
There's nothing you can teach me
That I can't learn from Mr Hathaway
I didn't get a lot in class
But I know it don't come in a shot glass
They tried to make me go to rehab but I said, 'No, no, no.'
Yes, I've been black but when I come back you'll know, know, know
I ain't got the time and if my daddy thinks I'm fine
He's tried to make me go to rehab but I won't go, go, go
The man said, 'Why do you think you're here?'
I said, 'I got no idea
I'm gonna, I'm gonna lose my baby
So I always keep a bottle near.'
He said, "I just think you're depressed."
This me "Yeah, baby, and the rest."
They tried to make me go to rehab but I said, 'No, no, no.'
Yes, I've been black but when I come back you'll know, know, know
I don't ever wanna drink again
I just, ooh, I just need a friend
I'm not gonna spend ten weeks
Have everyone think I'm on the mend
It's not just my pride
It's just 'til these tears have dried
They tried to make me go to rehab but I said, 'No, no, no.'
Yes, I've been black but when I come back you'll know, know, know
I ain't got the time and if my daddy thinks I'm fine
He's tried to make me go to rehab but I won't go, go, go
