Time to face your FEAR
and move from crisis to recovery
By: James Sanders,

A

s of the writing of this article,
States should be well on their way
to reopening in one way or another. Some
Governors have extended their stay-at-home orders, while others
are weighing the impact on the economy versus the potential for
continued spread of the Corona virus. For them, reopening is a
calculated roll of the dice that is worth it. I am not here to argue
which is right.
However, as we move from crisis to recovery, it is critical to
know that small businesses and organizations in total are the
largest employers in our country. Moreover, they will be the
engine of growth to take us out of this downturn. Importantly,
many of you are not just healthcare providers, you are the leaders
of these small businesses or organizations as well.
As leaders, you have the power to choose which way you want
to handle a crisis. Are you going to put your head in the sand
and hope for a recovery or do something about it proactively to
improve your chances for survival?
As I have read on the Internet (so it must be true), FEAR has
two meanings:
Forget Everything and Run
or
Face Everything and Rise.
I think these acronyms are important reminders of how
you make decisions about the direction of your business or
organization. Are you playing offense, defense, or a mix of
both? What are you doing to better position your business or
organization for the recovery? How are you handling your FEAR
as you make decisions about your business or organization?
Just like your patients come to you for professional advice, it
is critically important that you maintain contact with your own

"Board of Directors" who can help you make
critical decisions about both your personal and
professional life. Your accountants, attorneys, financial
advisors, insurance agents and mentors are all here to help
navigate the multitude of issues which may not have been critical
before this crisis, but now need to be revisited as we proceed
in a post Covid-19 society. Things to review and update could
include the following:
* Employment agreements
* Insurance coverage
* Equipment leases
* Office leases
* Loan agreements
* Partnership or Ownership agreements
* HR Policies
* Office or Business Standard Operating Procedures
* Disaster Recovery Plans
* Communications Policies
* ....and more
While the topics above may not be high on your priority
list, I can tell you that they are vitally important if you want
your business or organization to come out the other side of this
situation in a stronger position. Now is the time to be working
on your business or organization and not just in it.
Just remember, "The way to get started is to quit talking and
begin doing" - Walt Disney
To wrap up, I know that many of you have been on the
frontlines of keeping this pandemic at bay. For that, I am truly
grateful. Keep moving forward!
